Mount Pelion & Mount Olympus Region – Greece
This area is also known as the 'Playground of the gods'
The Pelion peninsula, on the Aegean coast of mainland Greece about 160 miles north of Athens, is an area which until recently was only known to the Greeks. It is only now that a few foreign tourists are getting to know this region.
Climatically, it is relatively warm from March to November, but very rarely scorchingly hot. Good winter rains explain the cloak of woodlands and fresh pastures. Its villages were traditionally linked by a system of paved donkey tracks known as calderimi, and it is these gentle old paths that you will follow for much of your holiday from the hill village of Miliés, and across the peninsula to delightful Tsangarada. From here we will take a delightful walk down to the tiny harbour and beach at Damouchari, where part of the Mama Mia was filmed. We will be based in the tradional Greek Village called Kissos for the majority of the time. You will also have the opportunity to visit Mount Olympus area. Finally, we will return to Athens and visit the various tourist sites! This trip packs a lot in a week and well worth it!
Itinerary and Highlights
Day 1 Fly to London. Arrive in Athens and then minibus to Kissos in the Pelion.
Day 2 Meander down to the delightful resort of Agios Ioannis, a favourite with the locals because of its restaurants and shops, and the sandy beach of Papa Nero. With the lush greenery of the Pelion behind and the azure of the Aegean Sea to the front this really is a wonderful location to while away the hours before returning 'home' to Kissos.
Day 3 Minibus to Miles The route contours through chestnut and beech forest to the attractive
village of Tsangarada, the emerald of the Pelion and blessed with a rich history. Because of the lush vegetation most of the village is hidden from sight! Visit three of its four squares shaded by huge plane trees (one is one thousand years old) and admire the craftsmanship of the old merchant houses with their carved marble balconies.
Day 4 Tsangarada to Aghios Joannis. Walk down to the delightful harbour at Damouchari, have a swim, then lunch in one of the tavernas by the sea. In the afternoon, stroll over the headland to the quiet resort of Aghios Joannis.
Day 5 Minibus to the Mount Olympus region and then walk up to the Refuge of Spilios Agapitos (overnight, with option if weather permitting, to trek to the summit next morning 2,917m)
Day 6 Trek to summit at 2,917m and then descend and travel back to Athens
Day 7 Sightseeing in Athens, follow by a delightful meal in a restaurant known only to locals.
Day 8 Enjoy shopping and then fly home.
Note: depending on weather conditions on Mount Olympus the itinerary may change
