This is a fantastic area to visit, for over a thousand years people have lived in this dramatic landscape, slowly cultivating the steep hillsides that lead down to the rocky shore
The Cinque Terre or Five lands- gets its name from the five picturesque villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore which are built at the base of this dramatic rocky coastline. The towns are linked by a network of pathways that take you through an extraordinary landscape of steep terraces built by hand with stone and earth. Now many of the terraces are being replanted with vines that produce the white crisp wine for which the region is famous. In addition we see the cultivation of lemons, oranges and olives along the terraced pathways that we walk past. This area offers a glorious natural and historical landscape that is best explored on foot. This fantastic trip walks the classic coastal trail – enjoy hiking and swimming by day and in the evening settle in for some delicious traditional Ligurian cuisine, enjoy the local reds and whites and watch the sun set over the Mediterranean
Itinerary and Highlights
Day1 (Sat) Arrive in Pisa and then train to Cinque Terra
Day2 Easy Coastal walk between Monterosso and Levanto
Day3 Train to Monterosso and then walk to Vernazza and Corniglia
Day4 Train to Riomaggoire: panoramic walk along coast to Corniglia and to Charming Portovenere (5-6 hours)
Day5 Walk along the ‘Sentiero del Amore’ to Manarola rest of the day Free
Day6 Train to Portovernere and then walk the length of the Cinque Terra ( you can drop off in a village if you find it difficult)
Day7 Travel to Pisa and overnight – visit the Leaning Tower
Day 8 Enjoy shopping and then fly home
